Safari sporadically crashing and burning on you? Can’t figure out why or when it will happen next? I can’t, either. But I have a theory…
I’m going to hypothesize that there’s no rhyme or reason for Safari crashes because it’s not really Safari’s fault: It’s falling victim to poor memory management from the application you used just prior. If you use an app that is memory intensive and that doesn’t free all the memory back up when you quit from it, you’re starting Safari at a disadvantage. Safari will motor along for as long as it can, but when it runs out of memory it seizes up and/or boots you out.
I’d suggest trying the following:

So I just started another restore. This time my iPhone crashed when syncing. That has never happened before. It went to an Apple logo and just sat there. No amount of rebooting or waiting made a difference.
This time, I’m trashing my 2 beta apps and the provisioning files that go with them. We’ll see how it goes, and if it crashes this badly AGAIN, I’m taking the sucker back to the Apple Store. I’m seriously tired of fracking around with this phone. I spend more time restoring it than actually using it.
Only a slight exaggeration there.
beta, crash, provisioning, restore
Wow. I had a MAJOR crash today. I have a feeling I know what caused it too…
I’m beta testing some apps, and I installed a new provision file—a file that allows the app to be run when it hasn’t been downloaded from the app store—along with the new beta version of the app. I set my phone up to sync overnight, since it had to do a full sync and backup for the new provision file to work.
I started to use my phone this morning, and crash. Crash. Crash. Apps failing all over the place. I couldn’t even get into the settings; it just displayed a blank screen. But not ALL the apps—the new beta version of the program I was testing worked. So I hooked it back up to iTunes to take that off. And it hung iTunes and never was recognized. Disconnecting if from iTunes brought up a flash of the iPhone info screen, and released the hang, but I had to finally put it into recovery mode and do a restore. I decided to set it up like a new iPhone and in the process of syncing back my music and apps, which will take a couple of hours.
Hopefully that will solve the issues.
UPDATE: Three hours and counting. The first sync is STILL going transferring over. The install of all the apps (probably about 30-40) took 2 hours by itself.
app, crash, sucks
This time on my beloved touch, which as been nothing but stable since I purchased the upgrade to 2.0. All of the Apps just started crashing after a sync. And the method I mentioned here to make them stop crashing did not work at all.
So. Restoring.
I’m too depressed even for a primal yell of fury.
What does this mean? Well, that the 2.02 update does nothing, in and of itself, to correct this app crashing problem. I had just applied the update to my touch last night.
crash, Update
Again all of my apps have started crashing. And again, I’m forced to do a restore. This is on a non-jailbroken regular ol’ 3G. I’m seriously frustrated. Unacceptable.
It seemed to start with a Scrabble crash and then nothing would start up. Every downloaded app just shuts down immediately after startup. Safari did crash on my several times in a short period yesterday; I don’t know if that is related or not. It was working fine this morning.
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!
Okay. After a primal scream of fury, I feel slightly better. I resisted the urge to hurl my phone against a wall. But only because it costs so damn much.
UPDATE: Too late, I discoverd a tip from this thread in the Apple Discussion iPhone Forum. Next time, if it happens again, I’m going to try it. Upshot: Delete an app and reinstall it from the iPhone (not iTunes) and all the apps should work again.
UPDATE: I tried this method on my touch when it started crashing all over the place a couple of hours ago… it didn’t work.
So far, a restore is the only method I know of correcting the problem once all the apps start crashing.
apps, crash, restore
Last night every non-apple app on my iPhone was crashing on launch. I tried rebooting the phone and it didn’t help. Very irritating. I don’t see why everything would stop working except for the pre-installed apps!
So, I’m trying a restore from a pre-crashy backup of my iPhone. It’s almost done… I hope it works, becaus I don’t want to have to set up every setting on my phone again from a fresh restore.
Anyone else had this problem recently? Let me know what you did to fix it.
EDIT: A restore from a previous back-up seemed to do the trick.
ANOTHER EDIT (3 hours later): I just downloaded some apps, and docked my iPhone to load ‘em. It’s making me do another restore.
WTH?
ANOTHER NOTHER EDIT: So just for closure, the second restore failed halfway through, and froze up iTunes and my iPhone. Or appeared to anyway. I pulled my iPhone and got it to reboot, and everything seemed fine. I did have to set up my email accounts though, which was a bit of a pain. But now everything is working smoothly. No crashes so far. I haven’t used it a lot though.
