Steve Job just confirmed that there will be an iPhone update Friday which promises, mostly (wait for it…) bug fixes!!

Significant improvement to battery life, no more app crashes & faster backups are among the highlights. Stay tuned for more after Friday. I’ll install it just for you! And report on what’s what. :)

FINALLY. Some iPhone apps for those of us who don’t regularly dabble in the black arts, but need to inflict revenge occasionally.

Usually the art of Voodoo takes years of study, chanting and human sacrifices to learn. Now all it takes is a couple of bucks for the YouDo Voodoo app. And you don’t even need a lock of your enemy’s hair to bring them pain. All you need is a finger.

The app will make the appropriate noises when you spear their torso or appendages. Or head, if you’re into the skull-piercing thing.

This app is lacking a few things. For example, I would like to be able to actually spear a picture of my enemy, rather than a generic doll. It also lacks the authentic ritual of a real voodoo ceremony. And it doesn’t work for real. But hey! It’s cathartic.

If you really need a customizable voodoo doll, try iVoodoo. You can use a camera roll picture to give your doll the likeness of your tortured victim. It also supports 5 dolls at once, and has specific pins for stratigic suffering, or blessing if you choose. But it’s also a whole dollar more, setting you back $3. All around it’s a more comprehensive voodoo app, but lacks the flair of YouDo Voodoo. But, on the positive side, iVoodoo doesn’t really do anything but make you feel better either.

Warning: These apps to be used while enemy is operating heavy machinery or driving. Hey, you don’t want to hurt someone else by mistake!!

Go git ‘em!!

The first things that I’d like to do are windsprints. :D If I were about 50 pounds lighter. Which is one of my goals for which this app may help me achieve.

When I first clicked on UltraTimer I was intending to use it as a “Crap-App of the Day” choice, because hey, who needs a separate timer when one is provided already on the iPhone? But when I delved into it, I was actually intrigued, then excited about the simple thing it can do, and does pretty well.

UltraTimer is the perfect app for setting up timed exercise routines. Basically what this allows is setting up a series of timed intervals.

Not only is it good for exercise, it’s good for other things, especially if you’re anal about how you take breaks. :) For example if you sit at your computer all day, you can set it for say, 55 minutes on, 5 minutes out of the chair, ect, until noon, then set an hour lunch break. Then resume. And never have to stop the timer.

It has a variety of sounds to set as alerts and alarms. Some are high intensity buzzers and bells, and others are low key and chimes and relaxing sounds.

I was skeptical of this because of course during activities I’ll want to use my iPod to play “Eye of the Tiger” when I train for my comeback fight against Clubber Lang. I thought since UltraTimer needed to play sounds, it wouldn’t be able to play the iPod.. that it would take over all the sound as other apps do. Not so! I can listen and use this app at the same time. Awesome.

The only thing I can see is that this app could use a little face lift. It has a pretty plain looking interface. But that’s picking nits. For what it does, UltraTimer doesn’t need fancy. Just utility.

I’m not even aware of a separate piece of hardware that will do what this does, so this seems like a bargain to me at $3. UltraTimer comes a long way from it’s place on the “Crap-App” short list to receiving a hearty thumbs-up from me.

Stitcher.com is a website which operates similarly to Pandora or Last.fm, except where those services find music that you might want to hear, Stitcher provides news and talk.

Now there’s a Stitcher app for the iPhone or touch.

Just choose from a variety of categories or sources as your starting point. At random Stitcher will play something. If you like it, thumbs up and Stitcher stores that listening preference. Thumbs down, and it will block that particular show and give a lower priority to playing shows like it. Love what you’re hearing? Tapping the star will add it to your favorites. Hate it? Skip it and move on. If you’re looking to listen to something very specific, there’s a search function.

As you listen more and more, Stitcher strings together your favorites and what it guesses might be your favorites. Truthfully, I haven’t listened enough to test if it really works well. But I love the concept, and since I’m an info junkie, I’ll be trying this out. Both on the iPhone with the free Stitcher app, and on the web from my computer where I’m sitting all day.

Check it out!

LET’S ROCK!

Most likely this is an iPod event, judging by the invite. My prediction? No more Classic. An all touch line, aside from maybe the nano. Book it.

If you don’t know what Twitter is, go to Twitter.com and check it out. It’s essentially a micro-blogging social site, where you can keep your friends up to date moment to moment about what you’re doing. It’s grown beyond that simple use though, to what amounts to almost a provide a personal news feed for your social circle and interests. Unsurprisingly, there’s lots of choices in the iPhone App Store that go beyond simply using the basic method of SMS to send twitter messages (tweeting) and receive tweets (twitter posts) on the iPhone.

I looked at Twitteriffic (free version), TwitterFon, Twinkle and Twittelater when comparing apps that I wanted to use for Tweeting. None of them were horrible. But none of them were without fault either.

Safari sporadically crashing and burning on you? Can’t figure out why or when it will happen next? I can’t, either. But I have a theory…

I’m going to hypothesize that there’s no rhyme or reason for Safari crashes because it’s not really Safari’s fault: It’s falling victim to poor memory management from the application you used just prior. If you use an app that is memory intensive and that doesn’t free all the memory back up when you quit from it, you’re starting Safari at a disadvantage. Safari will motor along for as long as it can, but when it runs out of memory it seizes up and/or boots you out.

I’d suggest trying the following:

I’m a fan of a couple of the other Ezone offerings—Crazy Lighter & Crazy Dummy—but was a bit reluctant to download Crazy Laser because I thought it would be a poor-man’s light saber.

But I took a chance and I’m glad I did, because it’s NOTHING like the light saber app, and in my opinion better. It’s more along the lines of a Star Trek phaser; press a button and a laser shoots. The app flashes and vibrates at the same time for some cool feedback, like power is really flowing through the phone.

The only thing I don’t like about it is the cheezy branding on the graphic. But otherwise this is a perfect app to goof around with when you’re frustrated with life and looking to vaporize something, at least in your imagination. ;)

As reported in DailyTech, an AT&T source explains why the 3G signal problems on the iPhone. It amounts to bad power management code in software versions pre-2.02.  Software versions 2.01 & before have bad power control algorithms and demand too much power from the cel nodes. When too many of these power sucking phones try to use an access point, some signals are unceremoniously dropped.

That is a very loose layman’s explanation. Go forth and read the original article. It’s fascinating, and should convince you to UPDATE TO 2.02!!!! Do it for your fellow AT&T users. Because this is going to be a problem until everyone updates their iPhone to v2.02. So if you haven’t yet, please do.
